One of the biggest barriers to high performance is annualized thinking. Annualized thinking is the unspoken belief that there is plenty of time in the year to make things happen.
If we have a slow start in January, we may be disappointed, but we think, “I’ve got 11 more months to make my goal.” We mistakenly believe that there is a lot of time in the year, and we act accordingly. We lack a sense of urgency and forget that every week is important, that every day counts.
Annualized goals and planning foster annualized thinking, which more often than not leads to mediocre performance. Try narrowing your focus by setting 12-week goals and working from a 12-week plan.
